2 Thessalonians
Paul’s second letter to the believers in Thessalonica came shortly after his first one, after he received word that many in the church believed the “Day of the Lord” had already come. While parts of his letter are still warm and encouraging, Paul addresses this issue directly, as well as the issue of some in the church becoming idle and refusing to work. Paul gives some very detailed descriptions of what to expect before the end comes. He also strengthens them in the knowledge that God will punish the wicked who persecute them. He then commands them to stand firm, not sitting in idleness, but walking in readiness, holding to the traditions they have been taught. This letter is still an encouragement for all of us today, to be aware of what is to come, to have hope that God will eventually return and bring ultimate justice, and to use the time that we have in this world wisely.
