The Gospel of John

Each of the Gospels has its own unique take on the Christ story. Matthew wrote to a Jewish audience, demonstrating Christ’s royalty and connection with Old Testament prophecy to show that he is the Messiah King. Mark wrote for the soldier-minded Romans. Luke wrote to a Greek audience and emphasizes Christ as the “Son of Man.”

The Gospel of John emphasizes the divinity of Jesus Christ, His authority to forgive sins and the fact that He is the author of life, through His miracles and his seven “I am” statements. The purpose this Gospel was written was to persuade all people to believe in Jesus, that “by believing you may have life in his name” (20:30). The book can be summarized in perhaps the most famous Bible verse of all time, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (3:16).
