A century after Jonah preached repentance to the Assyrians on the streets of Ninevah, Nahum came and preached at a time when Ninevah would not repent. The Assyrians were known for their brutality toward other nations. But Nahum preached that God will punish whom he will, and they were powerless to stop Him. Nahum’s prophecy is also directed toward Judah, who could rejoice at the good news that this terrible kingdom would fall.
