The title of the book of Numbers references the two censuses that are central to the book and described in detail. But the Hebrew title, “In the Wilderness,” is very telling, as the book outlines the journey the Israelites must take in the wilderness after refusing to take possession of the land God had given them. As in Leviticus, God’s holiness is emphasized, but also his faithfulness as one who keeps his covenant and provides for his people, even as he punishes them for their rebellion and unbelief.
